Blossom ends & Hearts
Blossom Ends & Hearts
The space between skin and bones defines itself as flesh – a layer reduced to core and periphery. In fruit however, the flesh is a place for seeds to disperse. It is a space for growth and nourishment.
Following an invitation from the E-MEX new music ensemble to create a piece for dancers and musicians relating to the theme of Flesh, the choreographer Lee Méir comes together in collaboration with the transdisciplinary artist Gretchen Blegen and eight dancers from different dance backgrounds, to create a site specific performance which lays out a foundation for seeding. Using improvised but carefully scored choreographic methods, both dancers and musicians look and listen for spaces of potential growth - between rhythm and chaos, sound and breath, gesture and state.
For this piece, Méir takes inspiration from a format of collaboration between Merce Cunningham, John Cage and Robert Rauschenberg, in which they would create the choreography, music and scenography separately and only come together a few days before the performance. She uses her developed rhythm based movement language to create an improvisation based evening, a succulent meeting point between dance, new music, and spatiality - a temporary stage for growth.
